I've tried both methods and prefer not sealing first. I use system three clear coat resin which is very thin watery like resin with a potlife of well over an hour. I put it on the glass and can let it sit for about 40 minutes before squeeging it off, adding extra resin where i see the wood soaking it in. I want it to soak as far into the wood as it can, (I am an advocate of strength over saving weight and this amount of extra weight is insignificant).

I have never had any problems using this method and the system three's pot life lets me move at a lesiurely pace. The downside (if you can call it one) is the clearcoat resin cures very slowly and takes a few days to become really hard. I only use it for wetout. You can still start the fill coats next day using regular resin though. If you do precoat let it soak in, don't wipe it off right away. You want it to get a good grip on the wood..... The debate continues.... :-)
