: Hi Bob
: Yeh, I did exactly that with my craftsman saw. I'm running 220v and a 2hp
: motor with two belt pulleys. If the motor will adapt to the mounting on
: you saw, and you have 220v capability, then I'd say go for it. You will
: definitely notice the difference. It doesn't bog down as easily. And one
: thing I didn't mention earlier, if you use a two belt pulley, you won't
: get the slippage as you get with one belt. Much of the time, when a saw
: blade bogs down, it is the belt slipping in the pulley under a load. They
: slip a lot. Some times a belt dressing helps, but, then the belt will get
: all gooped up with dust and gunk. I have converted and use all my power
: tools on 220v. The big ones that is. $50 doesn't seem too bad for a used
: motor of that size, or wouldn't be out here. They sell for around $200 or
: more new. Be sure to test it before buying. Wouldn't hurt if it was one
: with a break on it. Mine are and it helps stop the blade real fast. I
: think the capacitor start motors all have that feature, but, Not sure. ???
: If you look on the end cover of the motor, it may even say that it is
: convertable, and you can switch a couple of wires and make it 110v if you
: don't have the 220v capability. Don't change it unless you know what you
: are doing.
: If all is right, Yeh, I would go for it. You will be pleased with the
: difference in power. And by all means, do the double pulleys if you can,
: but, try to find the turned alluminum style and not the cast ones. They
: are balanced better when turned. Saves a little vibration and noise.
: Another point to make. If the wire on the switch is significantly smaller
: that the one on the motor, you may want to consider upgrading that too. If
: you pull a load with the 220v motor, the lighter 110v wire may get a
: little hot. Not always, but, possible. Mine is still the 110v wire from
: the switch to the wall outlet and it has gotten warm a time or two, but,
: no real problems. All the others I changed but the table saw
: Good Luck and let us know if you do it and how you like it.

Thanks, I do have 220 so I'm going to go ahead with this project. When I ripped the strips for my last boat I was having problems with sliping the belt untill I set the fence parallel to the blade and used feather boards. i used a 7 1/4" 24 tooth thin kerf blade and it worked great. There are photos of my boat at the link below. It's high water, I dont have to work today. I'm going paddeling.
