No, I've never tried them for varnish, but I'll bet they'd apply too thick of a layer - just what you don't want when trying to avoid sags. Plus, on a stripper, it probably wouldn't conform to concave surfaces too well. On a S&G that's not such a big issue. Let us know how it works out in practice.
