I ended up not sqeegieing the fill coat on the hull. Rolling the epoxy on put on a thin enough layer (we'll see tonight if there are drips). And I only tip out to remove bubbles and lines from the roller as well as perhaps slightly even out any excess epoxy. The yak is starting to look great.
