James, You can build yourself a perfectly good paddle for a few dollars but some of us just like Hi-tech toys. Carbon paddles are very light and strong. They tend to be quite expensive. Whetstone offers their paddles direct to the consumer, via the Internet although they have a small catalog and a toll free number.
