: I am ready to install the first strips on my Great Auk. Nick's book says to
: cut off the bead and bevel the edge where it will meet the deck half. With
: the bottom facing up I will have to flip the strip and visualize it upside
: down and then estimate a rolling bevel - all while holding the 18' strip
: in some yet-to-be-devised clamp. Can I just leave it the edge square until
: I finish the hull and flip the boat? Although the strip will be attached
: to frames, I can then use a rabbbet plane which cuts right to the edge.
I'm not familiar with the proceedure, so, may I ask this question. Why would it not be feasable to leave the bead on the first strip of the hull, and then double cove the first strip on the deck and therefore have a set of bead and cove to aid in alignment when the two halves are put together? Trimming off the inside edge of the cove on the deck would allow any angle to fill the cove with the adjoining bead from the hull. ??? Any thoughts on the idea, or has it been tried? I would even be tempted to try it on a S&G with the edges of the plywood trimmed the same way. Putting the edges on the plywood might be a trick, but....???
