Hi John,
I am not the most qualified person to be commenting on finishes - just been sticking with tried and true until now.
The take on urethanes is that they seem to "evaporate" or disappear within a year in an exterior application [but that is full time exposure]. That and a number of them [like epoxies, lots of different formulas with slight variations] are said to be incompatible with epoxy.
I have used urethane [Flecto brand] for years on my wooden bows with great results, I talked to the Flecto tech rep and he said NOT to use it over epoxy, it would not cure properly.
So, considering that the marketing people who label the product probably don't know what is actually inside the can - you can not go by the label. It comes to asking those who have tried it and KNOW or trying the experiments yourself.
The Minwax Helmsman Spar may be fine over epoxy - that is what I was looking for when I found the BEHR stuff.
George, in the following post said that it seem OK so I plan on trying the BEHR over epoxy on a couple of paddles. Figure that if it sticks to a flexing paddle it will stay on a hull. I will post my findings at the end of the paddling season.
