: Hi All,

: Has anybody have experience using BEHR No. 45 SUPER SPAR Clear Gloss Varnish
: over epoxy?

: I spoke to the technical support rep and he said that this product was
: designed for application to wood. He had heard of people using in on
: canoes but did not know if the varnish had been applied over epoxy. No
: commitment from the manufacturer, standard line: do a test and see.

: I am looking for a substitute for the marine varnishes that are now running
: around $50 CDN a liter!

: The BEHR No. 45 has a nice finish, UV inhibitors and is reasonably priced:
: $14 CDN a liter at Home Depot. This is the first product that I found that
: is called "varnish" and does not contain urethane [you have to
: read the tiny print on the cans].

: Any comments? Suggestions?

: Thanks,

: Hank

Hi Hank This spring I revarnished the kayak and am in the process of varnishing my newest project with the Behr ($31.99 CDN a gallon at Windsor Plywood) clear gloss super spar and I love the stuff . It dries fine over epoxy you can handle the boat the next day but it is still too soft to sand, I leave it at least a week between sandings and coats. It seems to dry a lttle too fast right out of the can and keeping a wet edge can be difficult but alot depends on temperature and humidity , but using some of the Interlux 333 brushing liquid with it really extends the working time and keeping a wet edge is easy in fact I have touched up areas 10 minutes later with no brush marks. I have tried the Minwax Helmsman exterior U.V. blocking urethane and I can say that it would not dry over epoxy even two weeks later it was still waxy and soft , so I used it on the picnic table and air conditioner enclosure which are cedar and now the stuff is peeling off in sheets two years later. My brother finished his S&G Guillemot with Flecto waterbased urethane with great results seems to be holding up well so far.... but time will tell. Must stop rambling now.

later Bill
