Peter, I just had a brainstorm. I ran out to the garage ( and you can't possibly know how difficult that was for this 51 yr old ) and looked up something I haven't heard of anyone trying yet. ELMER'S WOOD FILLER. I just remembered that it's a non-solvent base and white. It can be stained and will adhere to Varnish's, polyurethanes, shellac and oil based paints, and I'm thinkin' it would also work for epoxy. Would be worth a try. It can be mixed with your stain until you have the proper color. I would try some scraps with this and a stain to match and then glass over it. ????? It's easy to sand and clean up. Maybe you could get it close enough to not be noticable.
