Hi Ken;
James pretty much summed it up. As for the type of rag, I'll just dig through my pile and select one that doesn't leave lint or strings, it isn't very critical.
I was first introduced to this many years ago in high school woodshop. ALL of our projects had to be varnished with a rag, nothing else was acceptable. If you've never tried it before, you'll probably be surprised as I was at the ease of creating a great finish. When you've gotten to your last coat, simply proceed as shown on one of the "varnish faq" pages to get to a high gloss.
One thing is certain: You should never see a run or sag again!
