Hi Dean,
Actually, the car has not advanced very far since its introduction in 1886. All the components are essentially the same. They still use internal combustion engines, the brakes are the same as in turn of the century autos, headlights haven't changed since they went from acetylene to electric after the storage battery was introduced, etc., etc.
Now if you look at flight over the same period you will see huge advances from the first crude gliders to lunar landings and space shuttle flights. All this in less time than the automobile has existed!!
As for kayaks, I think the reason there have been few major advances is because if you advance the kayak any further it will no longer be a kayak. This is not to say that there will not be advances in the future, only that with current technology there is no radical advance available. Perhaps if someone discovers a new idea that can be crossed over to kayak design without changing a kayak into something else, we will see a major advancement.
