Timely rant Dean, I was just thinking about installing a rudder on my new boat. Not that it is lacking in tracking (it tracks beautifully) or that it is hard to turn (it turns nicely too) but I admit in a quartering sea it fights me just a little, probably due to the width. I have two reasons for wanting a rudder...

The main reason I wanted to install it for the same reason I traded in my old heavy fiberglass paddle for an ultralight composit one. It makes my life just a little easier. If I am paddling a long distance I am a little less tired at the end. Same with the rudder. I could spend the day wearing myself out compensating for wind/waves or I can just drop the rudder and enjoy myself. It doesn't mean I have to use it... but it is there if I need it. In fact I probably won't use it 80% of the time but there are instances I wish I had one.

The second reason is I love flying kites when I paddle. Get a big enough kite up there and you can have a really fun day sailing your kayak. Can't sail without a rudder... just won't work. (BTW never tie the kite to the boat or if you do use a quick release knot!)

So what's wrong with being lazy? It's when I have the most fun :-)
