: Thanks for all the answers on scarf joints below. I'm going to experiment
: with a couple of pieces of scrap cedar in my shop making finger joints on
: the ends of the planks. I have a shaper head with 1/8" finger joint
: cutters, that makes joints like a lot of wood trim you buy anymore. I was
: wondering if anyone else ever tried that, and did it work out. I'm going
: to test several different methods before I go and "trash" all
: that lumber I purchased.

: Hope I'm not boring people with all of my novice questions and ideas. (if
: nothing else, perhaps I'll give some of you a few laughs)

You are an enterprising fellow John. I've never attempted finger-joints on a 1/4" x 3/4" strip. Now, that's a challenge !! The scarf joint is probably your best bet and if you ask nice, there are a couple of fellas that had photos of their jigs for doing just that. To get started on your first boat, you may just want to try what's already proven and then in your liesure time between paddling you can invent new and wonderful ideas. Oh, and did you know my middle name is " TRASH ". Any of that wood you wish to toss my way will be greatly appreciated. :) :) Have a good day and enjoy!!

P.S. ( you have, however, given me an idea!!!! You've seen the pine molding at the local lumber yard, the ones that are finger-jointed, and in long lengths. Much cheaper as well. I wonder what kind of look I'd get with a deck made up of finger-jointed material, all in about 1' to 2' lengths??? )
