Actually, the only one of Chris Cunningham's plywood versions that I've seen had a 1"x~18" fixed skeg/keel on the stern, too. The builder had gone without the adjustable skeg that was included in the plans. In the 2 reviews of this kayak on the So. Cal. Kayak Builders web page, one guy built without the skeg and likes it that way, and the other built with the skeg and said it tracks well without it and that he only drops it down an inch to really 'lock it in' once in a while.
