Dean: I usually enjoy your posts but frankly your head is in a dark smelly place on this one. Long, straight trips are good and well, but many of us like to play in and around obstacles where a quick turning boat is not just nice but significantly safer. Sure, good edging technique can produce pivot turns, but if I have to react quickly to a sneaker wave or what not, I don't want to take the time. Ditto with rock gardens. I want to be able to dig in with a strong sweep and turn RIGHT NOW.

What about following seas? Most boats that I've paddled take a fair amount of work to maintain tracking in those conditions. A skeg will allow you to track better and therefore conserve on energy. Conserving energy is not synonomous with being lazy.

Your rant may be aplicable to your pet conditions, but applying it as a blanket is silly.
