Actually, I didn't really intend for it to be a blanket statement, but didn't want to go into a long rant that no one would read. I have to say that this short statement did generate a healthy amount of fun, though! I usually add my own $0.02 to topics that other people start. I won't make a habit of trying to annoy people though. There's a certain in-duh-vidual here that is already doing a nice job of that...

Obviously, there are good applications for skegs and rudders, like for tandems, people who like to fish out of their kayaks, people who don't want kayaking to be work but a very relaxing pasttime, and those like yourself who play in rock gardens and only need tracking on a part-time basis. I just think that most people do their kayaking in deeper water without much for obstacles, and that a better design is called for rather than a bolt-on (glass-in) solution.

Kayaks without skegs/rudders don't have to be hard to paddle in following seas -- Betsie Bay Kayaks and my Outer Island are 2 good examples, and both happen to be of the Greenland style...

: Dean: I usually enjoy your posts but frankly your head is in a dark smelly
: place on this one. Long, straight trips are good and well, but many of us
: like to play in and around obstacles where a quick turning boat is not
: just nice but significantly safer. Sure, good edging technique can produce
: pivot turns, but if I have to react quickly to a sneaker wave or what not,
: I don't want to take the time. Ditto with rock gardens. I want to be able
: to dig in with a strong sweep and turn RIGHT NOW.

: What about following seas? Most boats that I've paddled take a fair amount of
: work to maintain tracking in those conditions. A skeg will allow you to
: track better and therefore conserve on energy. Conserving energy is not
: synonomous with being lazy.

: Your rant may be aplicable to your pet conditions, but applying it as a
: blanket is silly.
