You could also try routing a groove around the edge of the form, set in .5" or so. This would give you a continous channel in which to clamp.

The one potential problem with your idea is that not only do you need inward pressure to keep the strips tight to the form, but also downwards to the previous strip ... this is often a more, or less situation .... infinite clamping positions are better than fixed.
