: I'm going to make my forms for my kayak tonight. I'll be using 3/4" 11
: ply guatambu plywood. I have some reservations about using a 2 x 4 for the
: strongback though. Framing lumber that we get in this area is really
: crummy. You can hand pick it in the lumber yard and it looks nice and
: straight. But after you take it in your shop and it continues drying, it
: can wind or curl considerably.
: I've considered laminating up a 2 x 4 beam out of kiln dried oak. And, I've
: looked at making the ladder type strongback as shown in Nick Schades book.
: I'd like to hear many opinions in order to assist me in making a choice.
: Thanks,
: John
Hey John
You've opened another can of worms with this one. There are so many different opinions and ideas out there that you won't believe it. Anywhere from a box-beam made out of plywood, to I beams, to square tubing and of course the ladder type which you mentioned. The ladder style has been used often and to be honest with you, I don't think any have been complained about. My belief is that you could use about anything, as long as you use enough support to keep it from sagging. I like the plywood box beam, with 3 or 4 supports. It's cheap, small, and with the proper support, will function very well, and not be a hindrance(?). You can build it on a table top, on freestanding posts, or even hang it from the ceiling. Lots to choose from. I think whatever fits in your shop area and makes you feel comfortable will work just fine. Just watch for square and straight. You've been there and done that, I know. Enjoy !!
