Hi Mark,
Of course it's all personal preference, but on my first boat I decided that I had my hands full just learning the building process without complicating my life with trying to get fancy. I'm glad I did it that way. Even though I was trying to follow all the steps exactly, circumstances conspired against me and I had a few blunders on my first boat. On the second boat, I was comfortable with the process and was able to relax and try some new stuff. Worked great for me, but it all depends on how much you want to commit-to on your first (of many) boats. Whater you decide, just make sure you can enjoy yourself while you're building.
Here's my first and second boat. Even the simple deck pattern of the first boat turned out fine. Good luck.
