In Response To: Redwood vs. Cedar (Craig Doyle)

I built my Outer Island primarily out of white cedar, mostly becuase I wanted a light-colored boat that would be more visible on the water. Lighter colors don't show scratches as much, either. Admittedly, it was hard finding clear, long, white cedar. My dad got lucky and found some between 11' and 14' long, air-dried, pretty clear, and more than enough for one kayak for $50. It was windfall wood from the big storm that went from Montana thru to the East coast three 4th-of-Julys ago. (I remember it well -- I was camping and my tent came crashing down on me...)
