I thought I'd try that too... my efforts along those lines lasted about 30 seconds before I realized the futility of my efforts. I put stitches every 6" or so (closer in high stress areas), and it really did not take much time to stitch or to remove the stitches... far less time than it would have taken to wrestle plywood and dozens of rolls of duct tape. The holes do not detract noticeably from the finished product.
Note that I am building Nick's design which he says is more difficult to shape than other S&G's (I have no experience with others and cannot vouch to that). Maybe that contributed to my difficulties.
