: How about a nice little check valve. One that allows air out but no water in.
Was out paddling all day Saturday --- man, was that a wonderful day! --- doing swim support work and then fun paddling, and this subject came up. For those of us with deck plates in our bulkheads, the idea of using a Powerade bottle top came up. Those big black tops with the flip lids. A highly scientific, on water experiment was held, and, when dry, you can blow through those things either way. But they seem to hold liquids pretty well either way. Just another exciting thought --- I'll stick with tiny holes.
But, really, these dramatic implosions can happen, especially in boats without hatches, and it could ruin your day. If you're paddling a boat without hatches, it's a really good idea to vent those compartments. Had one blow in on me, and it wasn't a lot of fun.
