I used the term "gelcoat" as a generic word for epoxy applied before applying the glass. A real gelcoat is resin applied in its normal state and then allowed to gel up on the mold. This reduces print through of the cloth to the finished surface. In my case, I don't let the epoxy gel, I just go straight to adding glass. I would get a smoother surface if I let the resin set up a bit after applying it.
