: I intend to convert my goldeneye into a two-piece so that it can be stored
: and carried on my boat safely (towing two tied either side of a dinghy
: works but not in rough weather and I don't want to add ski-rack type gear
: to the boat). The Goldeneye was built without bulkheads or hatches. My
: current plan is to cut immediately behind the cockpit, put a bulkhead on
: each new end, and connect the two with large diameter bolts/wingnuts. I
: will put a hatch in the aft section to give access to the bulkhead in that
: section and will leave the forward section alone for the time being. Any
: words of experience or advice such as materials and thickness of
: bulkheads, padding between the edges, etc. will be appreciated.

no experience, just some ideas.

I think 'easy rider' makes a yak that divides. If you can take a look at one for ideas.

Or i would make bulkheads out of 2 lyrs of 1/8 ply. One full size lyr and the second only around say 1 1/2in of perimeter, so 1/4in at the edges. Make ea bulkhead opposite so the flush faces face ea other. Drill say 6 or 8 holes around edges when stacked. Glue one bulkhead flush w/ the end of one pc of the yak and fillet the i/s like crazy, glue the other bulkhead in the yak say 1/8in to 1/4 in depressed and also fillet i/s like crazy. Cover o/s of ea bulkhead w/ some cloth over lapping the strips by say 2 in or so.

Put saran wrap on the depressed down bulkhead, and run a 1 1/2in wide bead of silicone all around the flush bulkhead (on both sides of ea bolthole) and put in the bolts and gently cinch together so the strips touch exactly. When the silicone cures the sides key into ea other(the 'gasket' is exposed so maybe depress ea side and key gasket), and the bolt holes are gasketed and the yak wont leak.

For set up it might be a good idea to put two opposing fittings on ea shear of the yak and web clamp together temporarily while placing the bolts.

For a joke it might cool to fabricate some suitcase like clamps instead and just line it up and clip together. Dont paddle backwards though!!
