Hi Larry,

I'm just starting a S&G project, and I have a similar goal - build cheap. I'm using plans from Sea Kayaker (you can call them and get a reprint for $5 I think). I started with lauan from Home Depot ($32). The biggest purchase you'll have to make is for glass and epoxy. I recommend Raka as a source for low prices on both.
