I've done the same thing, but used heat shrink tubing (Radio Shack). Use a 2" piece with only 1" hanging onto the end of the bungee. When you apply heat, the loose end of the tubing shrinks down smaller than the bungie, and the part on the bungee helps compress the bungee. Use the now shrunk tubing as a needle and thread in/out until your happy!
