Hi Dave, nice to meet you;

I'd be worried about solvents for just the reason you give. The oven cleaner is probably water based, however, as it appears to form a water soluble emulsion that can be rinsed off cleanly. My experience on wood saturated with linseed oil for almost 100 years was pretty positive. It sucked all of it out of the wood pores and sanded and finished nicely - albeit with some effort.

I agree that a test on a piece of plywood would be in order - It would be a shame if it stained the 8-Ball a blotchy bright purple!
