: No kidding about the heat and Dookie trouble! I'm near the coast in L.A., but
: the difference in working time between now and March/April when we were
: building our first boat is amazing. Something that we've been doing is
: mixing up the dookie (resin + hardner, then wood flour) as fast as we can,
: then fill a syringe (maybe a ziplock bag wouldn't get too hot with smaller
: quantities) and put the leftovers in the freezer. When you need the
: leftovers, just put them in the bag/whatever while it's cold and stiff.
: It'll loosen up as it warms. It seems to double our working time. The only
: problem being a bit of a color change, the dookie gets a bit lighter
: colored after being in the freezer. No prob for internal fillets, but I
: was a bit concerned since we're filling the oursides of the seams on our
: Coho. The color change was no problem since it darkened as it warmed and
: cured.
: Good Luck,
: Tim.
Hi Tim
Yeh, I was talking to Spidey the other day(email) and he mentioned about the fridge and cooling the components down. Then spreading them onto a piece of Butcher Paper. Just to see what it was like, I put the ingredients in my freezer( full sized upright ) in the garage and left it for an hour. I was on the computer here. When I went out to take a look, both the resin and hardener were about solid. Barely moved when turned on edge. I didn't mix them as it was close to bed time, but, I figure around 20 minutes aught to get it plenty cooled down. I was out at David Barrett's ( Poster below ) and he talked to me at length about the sawdust fillers and how to apply them. He gave me a bag of redwood sawdust to use on my project and on my Yak when it gets underway. I also went back in the evening and was given a demo of glassing the inside of his canoe's. I learned a lot that I would not have known when I started my Yak. Made it look like a pic-nic. We talked the whole time and he didn't miss a beat. He was using West System and I believe he worked his wet-out for over an hour from pour to touch up. Then, in a short while, he did a filler coat. I was impressed, totally. He started on a second canoe(both inside fiberglass) as I was heading for the door and home. Some of Us have to WORK for a living. Hmph! Great fella to talk to and I will be picking his brain often, I'm sure. I don't see how he has time to do the canoes actually, as he has so many things going. Wow!! Well, gotta go, as the bills don't pay themselves. Later,
