: I would not recommend using cedar for the entire paddle - it just seems to
: lack the strength. But the white pine is only slightly heavier, and offers
: much more strength. I've used the paddle in some pretty windy conditions
: and in some shallo, rocky areas, and it has suffered only a few minor
: scratches.

With all respect to Ken, I've built about a dozen Greenland paddles, all but one carved out of solid white or red cedar during the last ten years. All are still functional, in my use or with others. The only paddle I've ever broken was one in which I laminated some hardwood --- maybe oak? --- to a cedar one-by-six. Operationally, it was my favorite paddle, and had heavy use for about five years, but snapped in half near the transition (read: stress riser, dissimilar materials?) when I braced in a surf landing and caught a rock with the end of the blade.

For what it's worth, I really like cedar, and will continue to use it. Just a personal choice based on some experience. Your mileage ...
