North Water makes a rescue vest with 25 lbs. of flotation. It is not USCG certified. Why? They are a small company, and certification on a per-unit basis would make the retail price cost-prohibitive. Does it sell? You bet! It's one of the most well thought-out, durable, functional vests on the market.

Who really knows what's best for me? Me, or Big brother?! I know my vest is safer for me to wear than a commercial vest. I'm not trying to sell it to you.

Besides, if I really get concerned about it, I'll tie a $6 Kmart Type II PFD to the aft deck, and there's not a darn thing anyone can say about my uncertified PFD.
