You can make the bulkhead/footbrace horseshoe-shaped, so that you have a few inches around the perimeter to put your feet against, but still have a hollow place to stretch your legs out. Maybe only one leg at a time, though.

Another nice think about the bulkhead/footbrace is that the foam takes up 'dead' space that you wouldn't otherwise use, meaning less water in the cockpit if you have to do a re-entry.

Recently on a group paddle I helped a young lady un-jam a Yakima footbrace that was clogged with sand -- it took some oomph to free up. I, too, paddle in a sandy area, the East side of Lake Michigan, but have not gotten much sand in my kayaks. Even with a small 'Size 1' cockpit I can do a quick swish with my feet in the water before sticking them in the kayak, so my cockpit is fairly sand-free.

I was surprised when I got my Yakima footbraces that they came sans packaging and instructions. Not that a whole lot of instructions are necessary, but you would think that they would include a 'slots go down' note...
