I have some patches on the hull of my Outer Island where I see defects that could be described as seeing the weave or your 'sparkles.' I guess I see it as the weave, because the sparkles fall in a regular pattern consistent with the weave. I was thinking that it was either due to either starvation from not doing a seal coat on the wood or my not initially rolling enough epoxy on in spots. I couldn't see the defect until after the fill coats were applied. I don't know if our problems are one and the same...

George recently posted that he doesn't do fill coats -- he sands partly thru the outer layer of 3.2-oz. glass. If sanding into glass were that big of a problem, his kayaks must look like bass boats with all those sparkles! (Maybe this is what he means by 'jewlery quality.') And it would be a problem for all of us who feather the edges of our cloth.
