: Hello All;
: I'm not sure how many people even look at the "Top 10" prolific
: posters. I don't even know if it is regarded as a plus or minus if one is
: prolific or not. Shucks, I don't even know if this is a point worth
: considering for most board members.
: I do know that since I discovered I am fast approaching Lee (one of my
: favorite posters) for 1st place, my posting pattern has changed. I'm torn
: between wishing to impart what info I've gathered, or being known as a
: "prolific poster," and perhaps a "ratchet jaw." Some
: of my responses are made via email as a consequence, although I generally
: feel even my limited building knowledge might help others who are where I
: was just a few months ago.
: Many, if not most of the "Prolific Posters" posts are responses to
: queries (Re:) as opposed to new subject titles such as this one. People
: looking for help with what is a new situation for them, but might be old
: hat for others of us who faced that same dilemna "months" ago .
: . . ;-) I rarely see a new thread started by (i.e.) Lee, or the rest of
: the people in the "Top 10," but these people have been very
: supportive of new and old builders alike, and respond to most posters that
: they can assist. This is good. Having our responses tabulated and reported
: on as a "Prolific Poster" is at least questionable - Unless I am
: 180 degrees out of phase . . .
: How do you feel? What do you think of the format on the design board here at
: KBBS, where the number of views is displayed alongside the title?
: Best Regards, Spidey
: (No direct board responses from me should be anticipated at this moment, only
: one final comment to all [if any] who respond . . . I have to watch my
: prolific score . . .)
: Note to Lee: I did not mean to single you out or involve you in this
: discussion against your will, but after all, you are #1 . . . 8-0
Hey Spidey and all:
I think the "Top 10" is kind of a " Well, ya don't gotta look at it " kinda thing. It doesn't really represent anything more than to point out who posts the most. ????? Yeh, some new folks can look at it to find someone that may know what they're talking about, but, then, they might get me too. 8^0 I first saw the list way back in March or so and I felt really bad when I saw My name up there near the top. I'm thinkin' " hey, I don't have any business on that list." I haven't even built a boat yet. And so, I dodged many a question, and even stopped checking the BB for about a month. How dumb is that?? I started checking it out again, and I jumped back in with both feet when I found some interesting woodworking questions. And I kinda like to color things a bit. My point being that: the Top 10 list means absolutely nothing. The idea of this board is to help whoever needs help and it's worked fantastic for as long as I have been here. I think the list can be a bit intimidating to some, and if so, as like other situations, " JUST DON'T LOOK AT IT." I didn't have a problem until I saw it, and my name on it, and since I started posting again, I don't look at it. No problems. I've learned much more than I've been able to contribute, that's for sure, but, once in a while even I can help.
I do like the idea of the Bio's list. I may lose some fans if they know that I don't have any first hand knowledge about boats, just woodworking. O.K. I could be listed under making ugly fillets on an "8"Ball. :) Or how to mix and NOT use Glen-L epoxy in 100* temps in Central Calif. But, they may be better off going to where they can find out the most about what they need at that time. A list such as this would provide just that. Don't know if it would be feasible, but, maybe some sort of letter indicator to show what a person has built may pinpoint folks who could help the most on a certain question. ???? That may be getting too specific, but, the BIO's idea is a sound one.
Also, I think the " Views " tabulation is a good idea. I never knew what they were for until Nick took them off a few months ago, but, It would seem to me that seeing numerous responses to a topic would indicate that it was an intersting thread and may be well worth visiting. Personally, I read all of the opening posts and if it's something that I don't have any interest in, I don't bother with the following responses. Some topics have been covered several times in the past year, and the responses are about the same, so, I don't follow them as closely as others, but, there are always new folks who haven't seen them and ARE interested. There are also a few people I can't help but read their posts, as they are always informative, Your's Spidey, being among them. You've come a long way since the first time you asked, " Which Boat?" ( in not so many words ) Hope to keep reading them in the future.
