There's a reason why backbands are short

A backband is designed to support your hips against the pressure you put on the footpegs. It's not meant to support your back. In that regard, it should probably be called a "hip band". Back bands that protrude above the cockpit coaming will interfere with rolling and can be a real hassle when performing re-entries (you get tangled up in it or end up sitting on it after re-entering the boat). If you paddle with proper torso rotation, a high back band may cause chafing of the skin on your back. What you have sounds more like a backrest for a canoe seat than a kayak backband. If it works for you, great, but be aware of these potential problems.
