In Response To: Varnishing with a rag experience - not so good (Jason)
The August issue of Fine Woodwording has an article by a professional furniture refinisher on a related technique. He uses smooth-textured paper towels (his preferred brand is Viva) and thins the varnish a bit. Haven't tried it, but I pass it on for what it's worth.
