Thanks for all the supportive stories and suggestions. A little sanding and epoxy painting was what I had in mind, so I'm glad to hear that you all agree. It was one of those life lessons, but only a minor one.
I'll just have to accellerate my plans for building a new workshop. It's long overdue, and it will give me a place to work on some new boat projects as well...
