Fiberglass on Coaming

I spent all evening trying to get fiberglass fabric to lie flat on all sides of the cockpit coaming on my Spring Run. I finally gave up.

Since the coaming and the lip are made out of walnut and ash laminated with epoxy, do they really need fiberglass?
