The glass fiber links the little strips together to spread the load to other area. This distribute the stress. Glue is brittle and cannot spread the impact load out as well. What weight of cloth you use on the coaming? You may want to switch to lighter but more layers. Oh, by the way, did you bias cut your cloth?
