: my mind... specifically what kind of wood is the door skin made up of?
: Pete
Door skin is 1/8 inch Luan plywood. It sold in 3x7 feet or 4x8 feet size in most lumber yard. It is the cheapest hardwood plywood you can get -- only fir ply is cheaper. Doorskin is usually glue by water resistance exterior glue but not always; so please test you own. Luan is plantation grown false mohogany. It lacks the attractive figure most people look for -- in other word-- boring to someone. Doorskin is not produced in as tight a control as marine plywood. Void is common. Boring wood, you can paint it; total epoxy encapsulation will take care of non water proof glue; but void is totally different ball game. Ply with viod can break or does not bend as you intented, so select your wood carefully. Doorskin, being thinner, is extremely fracgile. After scrafing to 16' or longer, makes it likely to break when pick up. It happens to mine. Some people try to paint epoxy to toughen the panels to prevent scrapes and scrachs when moving the panels. Hope this helps. Good luck to your project.
