: What is my remedy?

If you have already varnished, remove that from the damaged area plus about 1/2" all around. Next, sand down to the bare wood in the damaged area. Cut a FG patch to match the hole and apply epoxy. Once that sets,I woul use a cabnit scraper to scrape the edges down flush. Cut a slightly smaller patch and repeat. Another round of patch and scrape may be required to bring everthing up flush, reapply varnish as required. If you never piuont it out, you'll be the only one who knows the spot is there.
