Betty, I took the liberty of reposting your request for info at the "Guillomot Kayak building forum" to Woodenboat Magazine's "boatbuilding / repair" forum. I know there are some very knowledgeable individuals at both sites who do structural repairs etc, and would be willing to tell what they know if it involves common boatbuilding materials.
