: on many woodlots (this mountain is in VT) the basswood is considered a useless tree. when the oak, maple and ash is cut for lumber the basswood is usually left on the mountain. it isn't even valued as a firewood. on a managed woodlot many of the less valued trees are cut to allow the hardwood more room to grow. If I take a couple of 12-14" 40 ft tall trees off a 200 acre mountain I will probably have enough for many kayaks and that would hardly be considered deforestation.
