: I've completed all the fibreglassing of my Great Auk both inside and out, and
: have rolled on the "fill coat" of epoxy on the outside in order
: to "fill" the weave. My question is how "fill" does
: the weave need to be prior to varnishing? In some spots on the outside,
: the pattern of the glass still shows through while in other spots the
: surface is flat and shiny with resin. Please note that in some rough spots
: (most commonly near the edges) I'll have to put some skim coats of epoxy
: to smooth up the surface before sanding (ie. avoid sanding into the
: glass)in order to get a "fair" finished surface, but in other
: currently "fair" spots where the fibreglass weave still shows
: through I'm wondering will the 6 coats of varnish take care of it (ie.
: make it totally smooth in the end)?
MOst folks use 2 to 3 fill coats to cover the weave enough and even it out. varnish will not do a great job in my opinion of filling things in. Plus when you start sanding it you will see all the even spots and have to go back and fill them again and then resand. save yourself some hassle and use multiple fill coats in the beginning rather than trying to correct in the end.
