Hi Smiley;

As John pointed out, you are coming in "after the fact," in that I've been discussing trying this for some time now. The polyester is a replacement for the final varnishing stage only. A local surfboard mfr lays up their boards with epoxy, but finishes them in polyester resin and they do look good. The PR doesn't have the amber tint of the varnish, and the woodgrain comes through nicely. I am extending their years-old technique to my kayak.

If you take a cruise through my kayak pages, you'll see it's been all epoxy until yesterday.
