Don't know the usual process for adding veneer to a deck, but on a well sanded but not yet finished sanded deck, you spray glued a larger sized(say 1/2in larger)paper pattern on the deck. Spray the paper so spray glue sticks more to the paper. Glue up yr veneer on the paper but do NOT cut the perimeter untill all or the bulk of the pces are in place. Then deeply cut the perimeter going right into the strip work below to appox the depth of the veneer.
Peel up the paper and venner overlay and flush chisel the strips near to the perimeter. Probabley only have to do the last inch or less. Glue the veneer in, cover w/ saran wrap and tape repeatedly around the yak w/ duct tape or vacuum bag it down or whatever. Probably will give some nice relief to the inlay.
Since you cut the yak and veneer at the same time the decoration will fit perfectly.
