Mike Allen's idea sounds interesting but scary -- taking a chisel to the kayak you've spent umpteen-hundred hours on. I think it could be screwed up too easily. I applied an iron-on veneer to my cockpit coaming. I cut out the word "Wakan" (Sioux for "spirit") out of iron-on edging veneer and applied it to my cockpit coaming prior to glassing. I went a bit heavy with the epoxy over the top to ensure I had enough to sand down to, and it worked great. The iron-on veneer is thicker than plain veneer, so I might not use that on the deck.
