: How feasible is it to build a boat outside? Do to a lack of room, that might
: be my one option right now. I'm in particular wondering about the
: finishing part of the project-it's not exactly dust free out there and
: cool weather is approching here in Michigan. I am thinking of doing a
: stitch and glue for a first kayak building adventure.
Hi Tom
Apart from the problems Andrew mentioned, and a major dust cloud, there aren't many problems that can't be overcome. Of course, the sun will discolor your wood as you work, so, you may have some color variations, but, if you are painting it, or just don't care about the color, that isn't a problem. Unless it takes several weeks of direct sun before finishing, then you will have to sand the oxidized wood before coating. You're most likely going to have to sand it anyway, so, no problem. You could invest in an alluminum cover, with cloth sides for about $150 to $170 and just work under the ( Tent ) all the time. Cold, Damp weather may be a bit tricky when you start to finish though. ?? Hope this helps.
