Scarfing deck on S&G kayak

I am almost ready to put the deck on my cheasapeake 17 and I don't like the idea of scarfing on a piece at the bow. Not only do I hate scarfing, but the grain on the piece of plywood I bought will make even a perfect joint obvious. I am thinking of making both the fore and aft decks out of one piece and making up the missing length with an extra small piece on either side of the cockpit. Has anyone tried this and does it look any better or worse than scarfing on a piece at the bow? Also, will having two butt joints beside the cockpit comprimise the structure significantly?
