: I am almost ready to put the deck on my cheasapeake 17 and I don't like the
: idea of scarfing on a piece at the bow. Not only do I hate scarfing, but
: the grain on the piece of plywood I bought will make even a perfect joint
: obvious. I am thinking of making both the fore and aft decks out of one
: piece and making up the missing length with an extra small piece on either
: side of the cockpit. Has anyone tried this and does it look any better or
: worse than scarfing on a piece at the bow? Also, will having two butt
: joints beside the cockpit comprimise the structure significantly?

Just an idea, but on one of the recent posts about r2k there's an interesting pic way of dealing w/ these. A couple of chevrons of a diff color right across the whole deck. I think those were like a symbolic bird, but it'd get you that extra length and keep the grain true as well. If scarfs or butts work, why not this way. (maybe bending compromised a bit)
