I simply cut the end of the bird's mouth shaft at an angle to match the back surface of the paddle blade. Thickened epoxy on both sides, and clamped it together.
The inside end of the blade had a bit of curvature here, that I didn't cut into the shaft, so the blade deformed a little when I clamped it to the straight cut on the shaft.
A socket wouldn't be a bad way to go, but I think that would require a second 'bagged piece. Glue the socket half to the back of the blade, and then glue the shaft into the blade.
I did get one tiny crack right at the end of the shaft. The blade out beyond the shaft there is really flexible, so there is a stress riser where the shaft terminates. After I add a bit more glass over that area, it should take care of things.
